About SANGOCO
SANGOCO (South African NGO Coalition) is a membership-based South African organization first established in 1995. It was created to co-ordinate non-government organizations input into Government policy. And to ensure that the rich traditions forged during the resistance to apartheid continue to serve the South African people. It serves as an umbrella organization for NGOs in South Africa and its members are from all over the region, working together on issues affecting the development of the South Africa country.
When the government came into office in 1994 it had a mandate to end poverty. The plan was to do this by meeting basic needs, economic restructuring, creating a democratic state and strengthening society. SANGOCO is all about supporting this government in achieving its goals.
There have been a number of significant policy changes since the Coalitions inception and these have led to a reassessment of its core role and function. The adoption of a macro-economic framework was the most important development and was supposed to lead to the redistribution of wealth, the creation of jobs and economic growth in general. Unfortunately, because of its neo-liberal character, the opposite occurred.
The structure of SANGOCO
The collective will and effort of its members is the strength behind the Coalition. The democratic nature of the organization means that every member is entitled to put forward the names of people to stand for office and vote in forums.
The National Assembly is the highest decision-making structure and is held during the bi-annual NGO Week. It is during this week that progress is assessed and plans are made for the future. The National Assembly is constituted by Provincial and Sartorial delegations and sits to review the progress of the Coalition, adopt resolutions and elect a National Executive Committee every two years. The NEC also governs the programmes of the Coalition and serves as its Board, oversees campaigns and resources, It does this with the help of the Executive Director and a secretariat who are based in Johannesburg.
The Coalition’s work is also coordinated at a regional and local level by Assemblies,Councils and Executive Committees that have been constituted in all nine South African Provinces.
Non-Profit Organizations in South Africa
A non-profit organization is a group that has been created for purposes other than making a profit. None of the organizations income is distributed to its members, directors or officers. It will have been incorporated for one or more objects, either public benefit or one relating to cultural or social activities, communal or group interests. Here we will be looking at non-profit organizations in South Africa that are sports related.
The Amy Foundation
Originally known as The Amy Biehl Foundation Trust, this non-profit organization was established in Cape Town, South Africa by Linda and Peter Bielh. It was created to commemorate their daughter, Amy Biehl, a white American anti-apartheid activist who was killed by a black mob during racial violence in 1993. Today, there are two organizations. The Amy Biehl Foundation USA and The Amy Foundation which is still based in Cape Town. The foundations mission statement is “to weave a barrier against violence” and “to prevent youth violence through a holistic approach to community development in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities in and around Cape Town”. It does this by empowering youths of the townships , mainly via after-school programs, to take part in activities like music, dance, drama, sports and crafts.
SAAS – South African Athletics Statisticians
This is a voluntary non-profit organization founded in 1952, to promote the maintenance of sound athletics statistics in South Africa. Every year it produces the South African Athletics Annual, in which primarily South African athletics statistics are published. It also includes international athletics results. It is currently in its 64th edition and respected athletics writer Wesley Botton edits the publication. This publication is an internationally recognized and respected publication that many consider to be indispensable for anyone wanting to keep up with the most important developments in South African Athletics.
