SANGOCO’s core mission is to eradicate poverty in a context where wealth and power have historically been the preserve of a racially-defined minority. SANGOCO’s main programmes are consistent with the fight against poverty.
Between 31 March and 19 June 1998, SANGOCO convened Speak Out on Poverty Hearings. For the first time in the history of South Africa, these landmark events ensured the poor an opportunity to be heard beyond a mere vote once in five years. SANGOCO continues to build campaigns that ensure the participation of the majority of South Africans in decision-making critical to their lives.
The Poverty Hearings culminated in the adoption of the War On Poverty Declaration which forms the basis of SANGOCO’s campaigns.
